Plant based healthier sweet treats
Why….
This one is personal to me.
I was the savoury queen, loved a family size bag of ketchup chips (crisps) as a teenager and young adult. Even during pregnancies, I would ‘crave’ chips! I just loved savoury snacking and never really ate much ‘cake’ or desserts.
It just wasn’t something I wanted. Somewhere and somehow as I reached my 40’s this flipped 180 and I was actually wanting to eat sweets and sugar…
Hormones
Hormones, taste buds changes, who knows, but suddenly I was finding myself wanting SUGAR!
Oh did I mention I also love coffee, pre 40’s I was drinking Americanos with milk (no sugar) now I’m very partial to a sugar-free vanilla almond milk latte! And with coffee, I love a little sweet treat! (More sugar!)
How to choose better
I’m so passionate about living a healthy lifestyle, especially as I navigate through peri-menopause. I strength train regularly, walk wherever I can & surround myself with ONLY good people (work in progress) so I’m fully aware too much sugar is a No-GO, but my body was screaming for SUGAR. I needed to do something about this addiction of mine. I started purchasing and trying healthier plant protein bars and treats. Some were horrible, dry, chalky and just nasty, but I did find a few that I actually liked and still do. The problem was the ingredients list was too long and with this things I couldn’t even pronounce so I knew I needed to make my own sugar treats that still tasted amazing.
Taking responsibility for making healthier choices
I started to research online and experiment with existing recipes and ‘veganise’ them. At this point, this was just for me to enjoy & satisfy my sweet tooth. My family and friends also enjoyed these and kept asking for more… HA…
I took advantage of my creative, thinking outside the box brain & came up with the plant based protein balls after a lot of back and fourth & tweaking. I needed them to taste like I was having a treat and not wasting my calories. Whether it was for pre or post workout, with a coffee or just something between meals… but still be healthier than a protein bar . I’m no expert, but i know what I like and I always know what ingredients I use…
Quality ingredients, handmade…
The feedback I received was always so positive so I decided to start the Instagram page simply_sabina_eats specifically for my treats, an avenue for me to share my passion and a little behind the scenes. I LOVE expressing myself and this was the perfect path. It was just a bit of fun, nothing too serious, just me being a silly 50 year old. I just wanted to share…I tend to overshare… Something happened when I started hand rolling these balls, I felt proud inside that i was taking responsibility and another step towards a healthier choice for me. It was like a fire in my belly and i could not stop… I felt I needed to share this with more people who may also struggle to find healthier tasty treats, especially with women who struggle with the sweet tooth cravings! . Simplysabinaeats.com was born.
